The old method (manual method) was time-consuming, costly, and sometimes dangerous for forestry employees. To resolve these issues, geomatic specialists started using drones, that produce two types of images: orthophotographs and scatter plots.
Orthophotographs are photographic images that have been corrected in terms of deformations linked to the relief of the terrain or in terms of objective distortion. Orthophotographs allow us to measure the length or surface of any object on the ground, in our case, the length and diameter of cut tree trunks. Once the lengths measured, geomatic specialists use scatter plots to calculate the latest information: the tree’s standing height, the tree stump’s height, and the diameter of the fallen tree trunks.
